The Word of God was delivered by Rev. Jacob B. Sumbayak, taken from Luke 2: 8-20 about the shepherds in the fields of Bethlehem.

The Shepherds in the Fields of Bethlehem

You can imagine that there was an amazing moment at that time. When the shepherds in the fields were keeping their flocks at night, suddenly the sky shone brightly as the angels of God appeared and the glory of God shone around them. They were terrified.

And the angel said unto them, “Do not be afraid, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people.” (Verse 10) So there was great news for all nations, not just one nation. What was the news? “For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Saviour, who is Christ the Lord.” (Verse 11)

The scenery was absolutely amazing and definitely incredibly beautiful. We do not know how many minutes this event took place, but from the darkness suddenly the light shone with a very beautiful, extraordinary singing voice.

So it was, when the angels had gone away from them into heaven, that the shepherds said to one another, “Let us now go to Bethlehem and see this thing that has come to pass, which the Lord has made known to us.” (Verse 15)

They believed the Word of God, so they went to Bethlehem. When they arrived there they enthusiastically told Joseph and Mary which was told them concerning the Child. All those who heard it marvelled at those things which were told them by the shepherds. They found everything exactly like what the angels had said. They saw the baby Jesus in the manger. So that the shepherds were overjoyed and returned with extraordinary joy. The good news is also the great joy that the Saviour, Christ, the Lord, was born in the city of David.

This great news was given to the shepherds of the fields. They were simple, not arrogant and sincere people. Why to them? Why wasn’t it given to the court of King Herod or the intellectuals, aristocrats or palace of the Roman emperor? Because these shepherds were sincere, simple and willing to believe.

What the angel said was truly joyful news. News of the coming of the Saviour, who is Christ the Lord, in the city of David. Saviour, meaning the person who gives us salvation by forgiving our sins. Christ means the Messiah. It means that the One who had born will become the Saviour, the Messiah, who is able to do the work of redemption. The place where He was born, in Bethlehem, in the City of David, was all according to the prophecy.

This is great news and the angels were very happy to deliver it. Angels know very well that if there is no Saviour then no human will be saved. Since Adam fell into sin 4000 years before Jesus was born, God, who loves man so much, had planned the birth of a Saviour. During 4000 years God had been seeking for people who truly believed in Him, from whom God would give birth to a Saviour. So God found Abraham who was faithful, then he found Isaac, the son of Abraham who also believed in Him. Then God found Jacob, the son of Isaac, who believed. Then among the 12 descendants of Jacob God found Judah, and it was from the tribe of Judah that God found David. From this, God planned a Saviour to be born from the line of David.

The Birth of a Saviour, God’s Long Plan for Human Salvation

Matthew 1:21, “And she will bring forth a Son, and you shall call His name Jesus, for He will save His people from their sins.”

The birth of the Saviour brought salvation to the whole world, and that joy is felt to this day. There is a joy every Christmas since the Saviour had born, the Lord Jesus had born. The birth of the Saviour has given us hope. God Most High was willing to come as a human being to atone for human sins and saves us. This is a great joy for all mankind. God’s great plan has been fulfilled in the birth of Jesus the Saviour of all men.

John 1:14, And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.

The Word became flesh as the Lord Jesus was born into the world, and we often call Him the son of God, to atone for our sins. This good news was the first said to the shepherds by the angel. This good news brings great joy not only to heaven but also to the earth.

It was amazing that the angels gave it to the shepherds. There was no child of any king that was born had the angels appeared in the sky and rejoiced to tell his birth. There had never been any. It was only when Jesus had born. Because the One who was born was not an ordinary person but He is a Saviour, the Messiah, God who came in the city of David.

The sign was that they would find a baby wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger. The manger is the place for the cattle’s feed and its place is in the stable, a dirty and unsuitable place. But in such a place like this that the Saviour was born, it was not in a palace. This Saviour was utterly humble, truly living life like an ordinary human.

He knew what it meant to work hard to earn money because his father was a carpenter. He also knew what it meant to be hungry and tired. He knew our weaknesses and the problems we face. Even He was tempted, but He did not sin (Hebrews 4:15). Jesus really lived a sinless and blameless life, so that he could become a sin offering. He sacrificed Himself to die on the cross to atone for our sins.

John 3:16, “Because God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him may not perish, but may have eternal life.”

Will you believe that it is our Saviour who was born? The angels were joyfully singing about the birth of the Saviour. The joy of the angels also brought the shepherds to rejoice at the birth of the Lord Jesus. The nations had awaited the birth of the Lord Jesus, as the nations need repentance.

The Savior is born, the news of joy, the news of Christmas, God is coming to visit men. When we believe in the Lord Jesus, there is a guarantee of salvation, even if we die, then we will rise at the end of time to enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

Jesus Has the Power to Heal

Jesus, who was planned to be born for the salvation of men, while on earth also healed all diseases and even raised up the dead. Just believe in Him, His power remains the same, He is willing to heal our sicknesses. In His name, there is still a miracle of healing.

Isaiah 53: 5, “But he was wounded for our transgressions, he was bruised for our iniquities: the chastisement of our peace was upon him; and with his stripes we are healed.”

God bears all the chastisements that were laid upon Him. He suffered severely and His body was full of stripes, that we may be healed. He carried all our sicknesses that He died on the cross so that we could live.

He bore all the sicknesses because Jesus wanted to heal us. No matter what the disease you have, it may be Covid-19 or last stage cancer, Jesus is able to heal you. Lay your hands on the sick part of your body, have faith, believe that Lord Jesus can heal you. All sicknesses and diseases from the devil have no longer power over you. In the name of Lord Jesus, we receive healing. [RS/HN/EM]
