KPPI (Praise and Divine Healing Service) was held online through live-stream program on Facebook and YouTube on Monday, May 11, 2020. The Word of God was delivered by Rev. Jacob B. Sumbayak about the adulterous woman who was forgiven by the Lord Jesus. The sermon was taken from the book of John 8: 1-11.
At that time, early in the morning, the Lord Jesus taught many people in the Temple. Then the scribes and Pharisees brought to Jesus a woman found in adultery. In accordance with the Law of Moses, that woman must be stoned to death.
They asked Jesus, “Now, what do you say?” They did this with the intention of getting a chance to blame Jesus. They confronted Jesus with a difficult choice. They knew that Jesus often taught the law of love, but also did not negate the law. However, Jesus did not immediately answer, but rather he bent down and started to write on the ground.
The horror of facing an inevitable death sentence
Let us imagine the condition of this woman. A person who is caught doing adultery must feel ashamed because everyone was watching her. In addition, this woman also knew that the punishment for those found to commit adultery was to be stoned to death.
Surely this woman was petrified because she knew that they had the authority to punish her. So, she was truly horrified by the punishment he would receive. She realized that her sin would bring death to her, she knew very well that she was wrong and ashamed of her mistake. At that time, the woman could have been under pressure and fear because the law had to be done. At that moment, she put her hope in Jesus.
Sometimes, we experience conditions like this. We know we are wrong and sinful, we want forgiveness, but where does that forgiveness come from? “Who can forgive me?” However, in verse 7, Jesus said: “Let any one of you who is without sin be the first to throw a stone at her.” After Jesus said so, all went one by one. They all knew that they were all sinners. So, no one would dare to throw stones. One by one they left, and only Jesus and the woman remained.
Go and Sin No More
Then Jesus said, “Woman, where are those thine accusers? hath no man condemned thee?” She said, “No man, Lord.” “And Jesus said unto her, “Neither do I condemn thee: go, and sin no more.”
How grateful she was because someone had freed her from the death sentence, He was Jesus. John 3:16 says: “For God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten Son, so that everyone who believes in him will not perish, but have eternal life.”
We might say, “Is there forgiveness for my long and many sins?” We certainly get forgiveness if we believe in Jesus. Tonight, is not an ordinary night, but the night where Jesus said He loves us and wants to forgive all our sins.
Jesus Wants to Heal All Your Sicknesses
The Word of God in Isaiah 53: 5says: ” But he was pierced for our transgressions, he was crushed for our iniquities; the punishment that brought us peace was on him, and by his wounds we are healed. (NIV)”
Jesus came to pay the debt for our sins. We truly deserve to be punished and go to hell. But there is one person who is willing to pay for our sins, Jesus. He was insulted, tortured, and even reviled because of us. He wants to replace us on the cross to redeem us from sin.
Jesus wants to heal whatever our sicknesses are. Whether it is an illness caused by sin, or because God’s work must be revealed (John 9: 1-3). If we are hurt by others, forgive that person first so that God’s work is revealed and we will be healed. Whatever our illness, whether Covid-19, heart, cancer, etc. believe that God will heal you.
